Earning Participation Miles on the Barclaycard Travel Community

I’ve posted a few of my travel stories on this website, and I’ve found the experience rewarding, and not just because I was going to earn Participation Miles (more on that in a minute). Posting a story was a pleasant walk down memory lane. It’s kind of like listening to a good song you haven’t heard in a long time. The music brings back memories from that time in your life (and hopefully in a pleasant way!). We designed the Barclaycard Travel Community with that experience in mind. At the end of telling your story you will have remembered things about your trip that you might otherwise have forgotten and you’ll also have a document of that trip that you can revisit. Plus, if it’s written well, other people can share that experience and learn more about the place you visited.

But enough of the warm and fuzzy, and back to earning miles for your participation in this community! The purpose of this blog is to dig in to how that works. So let’s get started. Registered members of the community can earn miles for 3 activities; completing a travel profile, posting a travel story (with at least 1 image) and having your story “kudoed” by other registered members.

Update December 23rd, 2013: We want to make sure that stories posted in the community are helpful to other members who are researching and reading these posts. In order to do that, we are asking for a minimum of 50 words to describe each story you post.

You will earn 500 miles for completing a profile and including the following information:

  1. - Creating a username
  2. - Giving us your email address (so we can tell you how many miles you’ve earned as well as update you on the latest community news; your email address will not be sold)
  3. - Selecting at least one travel interest
  4. - Selecting at least one travel companion
  5. - Selecting at least one travel style
  6. -Telling us 5 places you’ve been to

Telling us where you’ve traveled will hopefully spur you on to share your stories about those trips. Selecting the travel interests, companions and styles will allow us to provide you content on our homepage that is tailored to you. Sound good?

Update (4/11/2014):

You will earn 150 miles for telling a travel story.

Up to five (5) travel stories can be posted for an individual City, State, Country.

To earn your 150 miles, be sure to share your travel story with at least a 50 word description, select a few basic travel descriptions, upload at one at least unique and great pic from the trip, and provide more savory details about what you saw, where you ate and stayed. At the bottom of your story we will map out your trip so you can see the path you traveled. Give it a try and give us feedback about the experience in the discussion forums. Here is a blog with tips on how to write a great travel story.

Updage 4/11/2014:

Each detail added to a travel story using the map will earn 10 miles per detail.

You will earn 10 miles every time your story is kudoed:

We want to encourage great storytelling, and who better to assess great stories than your fellow travelers?! If someone likes your story and gives you a kudo for it we will add 10 miles to your account. We also encourage you to click on stories you like to reward the storytellers. Just click on the heart at the top of the detailed story or at the bottom of the story summary. Just note that, you will not earn 10 miles for kudos of story details or images.

Those are the three ways you can earn miles within this community. You can view your “Lifetime Participation Miles” total in your Travel Profile. Miles are updated every day on this page for the previous day’s activity. If you are a Barclaycard Arrival™ cardmember, your Participation Miles will be displayed on your monthly statement and will be transferred over to your account on the first of every month for the previous month’s activity. Community members will also receive an email alert that summarizes personal Participation Miles activity. And, on a monthly basis, we will send all community members a Barclaycard Travel Community newsletter that highlights great stories, helpful blogs and popular discussion topics. To learn more about how Participation Miles are updated on the community site and in your Arrival account (if applicable), click here.

A couple of important things I’d like to point out. You don’t have to be a Barclaycard Arrival cardmember to join the community and earn miles. However, the rewards for those miles are only intended for members residing in the United States. Also, community members who are Barclaycard Arrival cardmembers must link their account at the Barclaycard servicing site (BarclaycardUS.com) in the Account Settings area. This is how we will know you are a Barclaycard Arrival cardmember. Why is that important?  Because the value of miles are different for Barclaycard Arrival cardmembers and members who are not cardmembers. For more information on How To Link Your Travel Community Profile, click here.

For those of you who are not Barclaycard Arrival cardmembers, you will automatically be sent a $5 Amazon e-certificate  every time you earn 2,500 miles. The $5 can only be utilized within the United States. Barclaycard Arrival cardmembers will have the miles added to their Barclaycard Arrival account once per month and the miles will be shown as “Participation Miles” on the monthly billing statement.

Phew, I think that’s it. I encourage you to check out the detailed disclosure for this program here.

I look forward to reading your stories on the Barclaycard Travel Community. I know I’ve enjoyed writing mine and the trip down memory lane. I hope you enjoy the experience as much as I do. And I hope the miles you earn will jump start your next travel story.

fnkdumplin Thanks JaredY. Can't wait to start earning!!
pharsadi Thanks for the info! How do I link my credit card account with the travel community? I completed my profile but has not seen any points in the account.
AlifLaamMim This is great! Is there a limit to the amount of points that can be earned? Any daily/monthly limits? Thanks!
JaredY Hi pharsadi, you can link your accounts in the BarclaycardUS.com servicing site in your accounts set up. The site only updates miles once per day and that usually happens before 10am. I hope everything is working fine now.

Hi AlifLaamMim, as of now there is no limit. However, we do reserve the right to pull stories down if we feel they are not in the spirit of adding value to the community members.

Have a great weekend, especially if you are traveling.

Jared
NaifAM Sounds great!

Thank you Jared :)
bfralic Hey Jared,

This is a pretty neat new feature!

I just completed a profile including all of the info you listed, and I posted a story with photo. Didn't see any miles show up - does it take some time?

Cheers,
Brandon
pharsadi Hi Jared, I just checked my account page and it seems to be connected with the community already. But I have not seen the extra 500 points, and it has been about a week since I completed my profile. Help?? Thanks
richardson239 Will I earn 200 miles for every travel story that I write? Is there a limit on the number of stories that I can write and earn miles on?
pepe1245 It would be great if there was a way, through your profile perhaps, to see what stories you've kudo'd. Sort of like a favorites list. At this point seems the only way to save a story is to share it.
I400194 Sounds too simple-- but I'm in...
I400194 Jared, I've used my Barclays account to help pay for travel expenses while taking a trip of a lifetime with 2 of my boys to Germany this past summer. We visited the "Schloss" 'es of Germany while renting an Audi A1 which my 22 year old managed to get upto 140MPH. Loved the people, weather and Neu Schwanstein!
richardson239 How do you convert these points to your Barclaycard account so that I can see them when I log into my Barclaycard?
JaredY bfralic, miles won't post to your profile page until the following morning. I apologize for that. There is just some data we can't get in real-time.

pharsadi, where are you looking when you say you haven't seen the miles. Are you talking about your Arrival account? If so, those miles post on a monthly basis and you should see them on each statement. If you are talking about just within the profile area then we will look into what is happening.

As of now there is no limit to the number of stories you can tell. We ask that you give content that will provide value to other members. If we don't deem the story valuable, we can and have deleted some stories.

richardson239, the miles conversion will happen monthly so the first time you see the miles should be in your December statement.

I400194, that sounds like a great trip. I too loved my trip to Germany although I didn't use my Arrival card when I went. Barclaycard Arrival is still less than a year old!
Joseph421 JaredY thank you. I hope you crack down on all these fraudulent users posting nonsense stories with one sentence and using stock images. A few people have obviously been using a 2nd name to kudos their own stories because I am noticing some people with a kudos on every story usually within 1 min of them posting.
Yadadh I would suggest to restrict the use of this site to only Barclay Card members. I have seen some people may have taken photos of images from magazines or books and posted it on the site, which should be stopped. We have multiple card hard holders in our family, with different account numbers, and it is legal to kudo each others stories. We don't want some bad apples to spoil the sport. It is perfectly okay to kudo within a minute of posting the story as two valid members with valid accounts with Barclay can kudo each other. I agree we should not build a pyramid scheme, by trying to lure other members to kudo.
pharsadi JaredY. Thanks for the clarification and sorry for the misunderstanding. I thought the miles accumulated here (community travel page) are applied in the Arrival card. I do see the 500 miles in my community profile. How do we used the miles we earn in the community page?
JenniferH Hi @pharsadi, Just wanted to clarify: The Participation Miles are transferred over monthly to your Arrival Account. The calculation occurs on the 1st of every month for the previous month's activity and posts when your statement cycles. You can use the Participation Miles in the same manner that you do with miles earned with purchases. Thank you and welcome to the community!
Sjarends How do I do #6 in the requirements. I have done everything else
It's the 5 places I've been
JaxonsTravel Sjarends Absolutely love showing pics & telling stories..AND..getting rewarded. I'm curious if the miles rewarded on the Community would be the same value as the miles rewarded on my new Barclay MasterCard. Thanks...LOVE the Barclaycard Travel Community!
JaxonsTravel JaredY: Absolutely love showing pics & telling stories..AND..getting rewarded. I'm curious if the miles rewarded on the Community would be the same value as the miles rewarded on my new Barclay MasterCard. Thanks...LOVE the Barclaycard Travel Community! 0
JaredY Joseph421 & Yadadh: thank you for your thoughts on some of the stories that have been posted. Our goal is to provide valuable content to our customers and non-customers alike. We are doing our best to remove content with stock photography or stories that are not in the best interests of the community. It's thrilling to see someone share a great travel story and learn more about the world. But at the same time it's disheartening to see something that isn't really helping anyone.

JaxonsTravel, the miles earned in the travel community have the same value as the miles earned through the Barclaycard Arrival credit card.

Sjarends, In the profile you should be able to see a map provided by google maps. While viewing that map you should be able to see a button that says "places I have been to" (or something close to that). Simply type the name of the city you visited and select from the list. Just tell us 5 cities you've visited and that should finish the requirement for #6.
jgamburg Hi JaredY - My statement cycle closed yesterday but my participation miles from Dec didn't get transferred to my Arrival Account. Would you mind looking into this? Thanks so ever so much
JaredY jgamburg, we recently discovered an error where Barclaycard Arrival customers that cycle between 12/1 and 12/9 will not have their miles post at the proper time. We are working to remediate and will reach out to you about the situation. Still working out some kinks! My apologies.
Sjarends I don't understand how I can get back to my profile. Is there a phone number I can call for help?
Lillylolita74 JaredY, your info how to link to Barclaycard was very helpful
myjwjwjw2 hi! i don't see 500 miles on my profile page.. i filled my profile information yesterday...
spadegimas Hi JaredY, I don't see any miles on my community page, it has been 48 hours since I made my profile and posted a story with 1 like. Please advise.
JaxonsTravel Hey JaredY.. Yeah I haven't seen any points granted for my last 4 stories that I posted over 48 hours ago. Glitch?.. No worries!
JenniferH @Sjarends: You can view your Travel Profile by clicking your avatar image in the upper right corner of the web page. This will take you to your personal profile page where you can view the map and add in the places you've been to. If you are viewing on a tablet, you might not see all of the button capabilities. Let me know if you are still having issues.

Everyone,
We identified an issue on 12/10 at 12:40PM EST with the Participation Miles report and our tech team is working to correct the issue. I've confirmed that all community activity is still being recorded, we're having an issue displaying the daily updates. This issue should be resolved on Monday, 12/16. Thank you for your patience and we apologize for this inconvenience.

amywang Hi JaredY, I don't see any miles on my community page, it has been more than a week since I made my profile and posted a story with 1 image. Please advise. Thanks.
saleebo56 I have linked to my arrival account and did not see the 500 miles added to my toal. what did I do wrong?
traveljunkie Hi, JaredY, I linked my card a week ago, and don't see the miles yet. Maybe I need to wait more?
JaxonsTravel Miles are added to your arrival account once a month
casanovaj I linked my card back in early late October and did some stories and created my profile. I have yet to see the points carry over to my Barclay's Account. Can someone help me out here? Correction I see them on my second statement not the first. Thanks!
casanovaj JaredY real quick question. I just noticed the points I got were for the three stories and not the profile. I believe I did everything on your list. The only one I'm concerned with is step six. Is that 5 stories that are needed or where do we put the 5 places? Thanks!
JaredY casanovaj,
The 5 places are places you need to locate in teh google map provided in the profile. You can tell us a place you've been or a place you know well and that will fulfill the profile requirement. Let me know if you've done this and are still having issues getting the 500 miles.

Jared
CaptKenny Hello! Thanks for creating a great site full of enjoyable travel stories. Many of the stories/photos really are interesting, and the points/kudos provide a fun little collection/ranking feature as well. Quick question -- Are points awarded to the author of Comments which are kudo-ed? (as compared to the author of the story itself). Thanks in advance and keep up the good work!
jellydoboy Thank you for this summary! I am excited to join this community to share my experiences and learn from others!
Emmit23 I did everything it said to get the first 500 points but nothing yet!
go4sergio Hi Jared,
How about this suggestion for earning miles and encouraging participation: Barclay rewards miles for responses to traveler questions. This will make the blog a lot more like TripAdvisor, which is my go to blog site when doing research for a trip. I think it would be awesome to grow the Barclay blog site to a reputable site like TripAdvisor and that all begins by encouraging bloggers to continually come to this website to post questions or offer some of their travel wisdom. The reward can be as simple as 5 miles per question answered and the person who asked the question rated your answer as "helpful" or something to that effect. Just a thought. Thanks!
Sjarends What should we do if we don't get the 500 points added to our account?
jackarol According to my Travel community account I have earned over 700 miles (they were posted 2 months ago). However, to date NO miles have been added to my Travel rewards total. Why the delay??
PaulWalkerLover I completed the profile with all the information provided in this blog to get 500 miles. It's been a week and still no points!
ChristinaS @Emmit23, @sjarends: I see that your 500 participation miles for completing your profile have been added to your account. Let me know if you still don't see the miles.

@PaulWalkerLover: I see that you haven't added your hometown to your profile. Once you do that, your profile will be complete and you will receive your 500 participation miles. The miles will post to your account the following morning.
DISKNEEFAN Jared, I am having a great time writing on the blog. It is fun and am starting to get attention from other writers which is cool too. I have noticed that I haven't gotten the 500 points for the profile page. Is there a reason?

Thank you so much for managing the page!
ChristinaS Hi @DISKNEEFAN. Welcome to the community! To complete your profile to earn the 500 participation miles, please tell us five places you have been to on your profile map. After you add this information, your profile will be complete and your miles will be added to your account.
joy2go this is very helpful, thanks!
JaxonsTravel Jared, I really enjoy learning about the different counties that are still on my bucket list - great travel community. The miles seem to be posting accurately every morning from the prior day stories. With the exception of the last 20 stories that I posted. Was curious if there is a glitch in the system. Thanks!
